Established in 1979, IG Design was an impressive performer in the early years, having delivered consistent profit growth for two and a half decades. By the early 2000s, it had an arm lock on the Christmas gift wrap market in the UK whilst its diet of acquisitions had also taken it into wrapping accessories, crackers, greeting cards, character licenced stationery, gift tags and so on. The problem was that an overwhelming bit of gift wrap was retailers’ own brand where margins were progressively getting squeezed and when production problems occurred, the rot set in.By the time current chief executive, Paul Fineman, took the reins in 2008, it was losing £15m and had overwhelming debts.
