The last major recession in 2008 proved that even in the worst economic conditions, ecommerce could still see strong growth as ecommerce penetration was very low, just 5% at the time. Although penetration in the UK has since grown to close to 26% (having peaked at >40% during Covid), the online travel category still looks set to emerge a big winner. This is because the pandemic took a wrecking ball to the sector; not only did Thomas Cook shops disappear from the high street, leaving 15% of the market ‘up for grabs’ but subsequent lockdowns and restricted travel saw swathes of smaller agents disappear.
