Volex (VLX; 283.5p), led for the past eight years by Nat Rothschild, has achieved a remarkable transformation. Just eight years ago it was predominantly a power cord business, battling with customers like Apple who would squeeze its margins down at the start of each year. But since his arrival it has ditched low margin work and reinvented itself via 11 acquisitions as a specialist electronics company operating an increasingly international chain of plants offering electric vehicle power cables (now including the bits on the vehicle itself into which cables plug), medical equipment components, as well as components for the complex industrial sector (including data centre cabling and wire harnesses into the defence sector).
