Regular readers will recall Judges Scientific (JDG; 8300p) was a main profile in May ‘11 and has climbed from £4 to the current £83 (despite paying huge special dividends along the way). I have known chairman David Cicurel since the early 1990s when he was involved in a roll-up at Continental Foods but that went nowhere before he literally stumbled on an opportunity in scientific instruments. Like him, it turns out that Volex’s chairman, Nat Rothschild, not only got many little things right, but he also hit on something bigger. Rothschild is not the obvious person to build up the electronics firm, having been a director at Barrick Gold, Genel Energy and Indonesian mining firm Bumi but at Volex he has found his true calling.
