When I wrote about GAN (GAN; 135p) in the September issue, I included a quote from the colourful chief executive Dermot Smurfit along the lines of, “my business which has sucked for so long could suddenly become the world’s best business.” He was referring to the growth that is coming about as the US sports betting market opens up. I think the management at Volex would be forgiven if they too were talking in the same feisty manner. Their business has also sucked for years but in the last five it has been busy reinventing itself as a specialist in electronic manufacturing services.
