The FTSE Small Cap (ex IT) index is right up against the upper resistance highlighted in December, at 6000. A break up through this level should give control to the optimists. At the other end of the capitalisation spectrum, the FTSE-100 is holding by a thread just above the equivalent level of 8,700. For both to hold above these levels, and advance further, there remains a need for greater confidence. Trump’s daily policy gyrations have undermined confidence globally. In the UK it remains to be seen if we will get sufficient interest rate cuts, which is impossible to judge from today’s perspective as no one knows which hole Trump will have dug deeper in the weeks and months ahead.
