Investors with longish memories might recall a company called YJ Lovell, which later changed its name to Montpelier and subsequently to Renew. The company floated in 1968 and grew at a very fast pace in the 1980s and 90s with acquisitions in the areas of land development, social housebuilding, shopfitting and plant hire. It proved a huge success early on but a decade ago when the current chief executive Brian May's predecessor was at the helm, a number of mistakes were made. A rush of blood to the head saw good businesses being sold off and some bad ones acquired including Allenbuild, a construction business that still forms the rump of Renew's specialist building division.However, quite a lot has changed since May took over five ...
