Maiden results were ahead of expectations set at the IPO with sales +33% at £122m and profit +22% at £16.4m. Speaking to chief executive Sandy Chadha and finance director Suzanne Smith, my first question was why central costs had also climbed £3m year-on-year; after all, this is a business with “high capital velocity” - a small amount of investment goes a long way in growing sales. Smith says that of the £3m, roughly £1.5m is direct costs (such as carriage, freight, etc) but the other £1.5m is made up of additional board members, additional investment in building its Direct to Customer (DTC) capability with an online distribution centre and dedicated staff, and consultancy ...
