For more than 160 years, wallpaper and fabric brand Sanderson (SDG; 52.75p) has been a quiet giant in British interiors, steeped in the aesthetics of William Morris and English country house elegance. But today, under the leadership of CEO Lisa Montague, who took the reins in 2019, its ambition is to grow in the US, where it currently lags its potential. While rival Colefax (CFX; 805p) derives c60% of its sales from the region, for SDG it is 20%. Montague’s plan has been to double that figure, simplify product lines, and use licensing to unlock the company’s formidable archive of iconic designs, at the same time becoming leaner by ramping up digital printing and investing in direct to consumer platforms.
