I still remember the day I drove up to Watford in 2016 to meet Majestic Wine. Founded forty years earlier, Majestic had successfully expanded through brick-and-mortar stores, but the store chain was starting to lose momentum. It was struggling to compete with supermarkets, like-for-like sales were declining, and the returns on new store openings had weakened. In an attempt to revive its fortunes, Majestic had just acquired Naked Wines, an online subscription-based wine retailer in the early growth stage of its development.
