Most investors still look at EnSilica and see a chip-design consultancy. That’s a bit like looking at a caterpillar and valuing it as a slightly ambitious worm. What they’re missing is that the company is trying to transform itself from an engineering-services firm into a genuine fabless semiconductor company, selling ASSPs (application-specific standard products) and generating recurring silicon supply revenue rather than simply billing engineers by the hour. Much of the heavy lifting has been funded by subsidies from the European and UK space agencies, and the result is a growing portfolio of proprietary communications and space IP that could become vastly more valuable than the design fees that created it.
