Shanker Patel never meant to become a merchant king. It was the early 1990s. He was fresh out of the London School of Economics with a law degree and staring down a bleak recession. Patel, 21, had planned for the courtroom, not the warehouse. But fate - like markets - rarely moves in straight lines. A family friend asked him to help out with a tiny West London homewares shop called Lords at Home.  Patel became a shareholder in 1993 and joined as chief executive in 1999. One acquisition followed the next, and now, three decades and 20 acquisitions later, Patel presides over Lords, one of the UK's biggest building materials distributors with 47 yards.
