Card Factory has warned that Christmas trading was weak, which it put down to falling high street footfall rather than the quality of the tat it sells, and on the assumption that these trading trends persist over the remaining seven weeks of its financial year, it expects to deliver a pretax profit for the year of £55m-£60m - a miss of £10m-£15m. Other operations, including those in North America and the Republic of Ireland, and its online offer, Funky Pigeon, “remain in line with expectations.” The law of large numbers is starting to take root and with Royal Mail stamp prices increasing sharply and deliveries so problematic, physical card posting isn’t suddenly going to bust into life.
